7/31/2023 0 Comments Data merge indesign cs5.5![]() You'll probably want to set display="none" on the elements so that the groups are hidden by default when you open the file in Illustrator. You simply need to tokenize the CSV and inject the values into your SVG "template". Head don't know how strong your programming background is, but hopefully you can see where this is going. Now take a look at CSV, the less-hectic of the two: Bob Martin,Head Ferry,Asst. Head Illustrator, this would look something like this: Take a look at a very basic SVG file with just some text: Luckily for you, both of those exist: CSV and SVG. You would need to export the spreadsheet into a format that is easily readable and modified, then translate that into a vector format that has the same attributes. It's not impossible, but it would take some legwork. I haven't looked into this, but this would be another process in itself. In addition to this issue, I would first have to create an XML file, because the data sets cannot be imported from a spreadsheet. But unfortunately, the way the AI actions work, I cannot select the new layer created, so it pastes everything on one layer. I did a sample test of 5 data sets (Like I said I have about 100 in total), and I was able to create a new layer and paste the data set. I got about 75% of the way there by creating variables and data sets using Illustrator. So that's why I have to use illustrator, and why I have to do it the way that I'm trying. The guys doing the video need the file in illustrator, and they need the data from the spreadsheet on a separate layer per data set. I am creating slides for a video based on data from a spreadsheet. Trying to simplify my query obviously returned the wrong answers, so I'll state the more complex example of what I'm trying to do: Which in the example of creating business cards would have been the proper way to go. ![]() Some folks came up with a great answer to this question, which was to use InDesign instead of Illustrator. I initially posted this question in a general manner, using an example of business cards. If not, this is going to take a VERY long time. Is there a way to import this spreadsheet into illustrator so that I can have one layer for each row via setting up some variables in the Illustrator file? So for instance name, email, phone, title. I have several columns that need to be imported for some business cards. Not only the text fields, but also the image containers and the ones for QR codes.I have a spreadsheet with a TON of content that I need to import to layers via Illustrator. Every contents that was injected by a data field will be tagged as XML. If the data fields are positioned on master pages, the merged document will suddenly contain an XML structure. In the moment you change and update a data source and there are fields in the document that are not listed in the data source anymore you break the hyperlinks to "ghost hyperlinks". In the moment you remove a data source from a document all your hyperlinks in the Hyperlinks panel will turn into "ghost hyperlinks" ( if no other, "normal" hyperlinks are present in the document ). InDesign's data merge is built around hyperlinks! The missing link, so to say, are missing data fields in the document that would complete a given hyperlink. My take is: In fact the hyperlinks David is seeing as "ghost hyperlinks" are actually real hyperlinks. For that special case I developed a script, that would remove all dataMergeImagePlaceholders and put the placed graphics back to their containers.Ībout what David Blatner said in his article about "ghost hyperlinks" at InDesign Secrets: There might be some "regular" hyperlinks there as well. Oh, and it is very tedious if you want just remove the data merge image placeholders and not the ones for texts and you have hundreds of them in the document. Removing the links will also remove the placed contents. ![]() And yes, we found the solution by either removing the links associated with the data fields or we could remove the contents with the brackets in the Layers panel.īut what if a user was unaware that the document originally was prepared for data merge and already moved on placing graphics to containers that are "tagged" as dataMergeImagePlaceholders? I discussed the issue on in private with Jan. ![]() David Blatner wrote a good piece on it here:…" ![]() "…If I have a merge where I'm having difficulty working out what fields were/weren't used, I use the hyperlinks palette to remove any error-causing links. ![]()
